Vol. 41 ¿Cuántos metros se necesita para tapizar?

Have you ever wanted to give your sofa a makeover without having to buy a new one?

One of the most important objects in the interior of a home is the furniture, because in addition to functionality, comfort and aesthetics, these make a space look more welcoming and less empty. However, we are not always willing to buy a new one every time it wears out. Therefore, today we will tell you how many meters of fabric you will need to be able to reupholster and rejuvenate the product without having to spend excessively.

Below we will mention some tips to know how to measure objects and how much fabric should be calculated to upholster armchairs, chairs, cushions, sofas, etc.

First of all, it is essential to know that fabrics have different widths, generally upholstery fabrics are usually 1.40 meters wide, although some are 2.80 meters wide. Therefore, ask about the width of the textile before purchasing it to estimate how much will be required.

Another important point that you should know if you are going to upholster is to know what type of fabric or category you want to obtain, that is, leather, fur, velvet, linen, prints, chenille, loop, fabrics with anti-stain treatment, such as Revolution or Easy Clean, ideal for homes where there are children, among others, since this not only determines the durability, but also the stretch or elongation that a fabric has, since the calculation must be adjusted according to the stretch of each fabric.

To measure an armchair or sofa it will be important to take into consideration the pattern repetition, the vertical dimensions (V) and the horizontal dimensions (H).

Now, first you start taking the measurements of his back, both the height and the width from edge to edge. Then you go with the height and width of the back cushion, later you go with the seat cushion only the depth and width.

Lastly, the depth of the arm from back to front and length around the arm from the seat to the floor.

Depending on the measurements, the shape of the article and the repetition of the patterns, the number of textile meters is calculated. However, we want to make things easier for all our readers, so we will give in general terms an approximate proportion of the most common products on the market.

For two-space armchairs, between 10 and 12 meters of fabric are needed, while a three-space armchair requires between 14 and 16 meters.

For one armchair, 2 or 3 meters of fabric are required. In the case of a chair, about 80 centimeters will be needed if only the seat is reupholstered; if it has a backrest and you want to upholster it, an extra 1 or 2 meters will be required.

For cushions, the most common measurements are 45 x 45, 40 x 40 and 30 x 50 cm. As almost all the fabrics are 1.40 meters wide, it is easy to calculate the fabric needed depending on the number of cushions you want to make. It is better to put more cushions of those sizes, than fewer and larger ones. The construction has to be with a zipper, with buttons, ties or in any way that you can remove the filling to wash in the washing machine or take to the dry cleaner.

Remember that the areas with the most friction should be reinforced, since they wear out more frequently and pilling begins to appear on the textile. You can even use covers to prevent deterioration and prolong the useful life of the product.
